Avian virology and immunology

Head of Service:

Anticipating, detecting and monitoring avian viral diseases, mainly bird flu and Newcastle disease

We mainly detect, identify and monitor the two notifiable viral infections in poultry, namely bird flu and Newcastle disease. Through monitoring in both poultry and wild birds, we provide an early detection service and monitor potential threats, both nationally and internationally. In close collaboration with the diagnostic activity, our research aims to better understand the mechanisms of adaptation and virulence as well as the immunity reached in the host following vaccination or infection. On the basis of our expertise, we advise the health authorities on an ongoing basis to help them control and counter animal diseases of viral origin.
