Description of the test

IFAT for the detection of IgG and IgM antibodies to zika virus

Purpose of the test

Diagnosis

Criteria for performing this test

  • Clinical suspicion.
  • Unless this is a confirmation (in that case, state your own result on the request form), billing is done according to RIZIV nomenclature.
  • In the early phase of the disease, diagnosis can be made with PCR on serum (< 5 days). Therefore, always indicate the interval between the onset of symptoms and sample collection on the request form.

Also state:

  • country visited
  • pregnancy
  • if asymptomatic: date of return from endemic area

Instructions for the sample

  • Serum
  • Minimum amount: 1 ml
  • Store at 4 °C

Instructions for transport

  • Samples can be shipped at room temperature.
  • Transit time should be kept as short as possible (Avoid transport during weekends or holidays).

Unacceptable request

Analyses cannot be performed in case of insufficient sample

Turnaround time (and frequency of analysis)

  • ELISA: 5 days on average.
  • Virus neutralisation test: 16 days on average

Reporting of test results

The report will be sent by fax, post or e-mail.
