BACKGROUND: Extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB), defined as TB caused by a Mycobacterium strain resistant to at least rifampicin, isoniazid, any fluoroquinolone and one of the injectable anti-tuberculosis drugs, remains a worldwide public health threat.
