Cholera has not been endemic in Europe for many years. However, it remains a serious pathology in other countries of the world, where basic rules of hygiene are not always observed, drinkable water is not always available and water purification proves inadequate.

Cholera is a very rare disease in Belgium that is contracted mainly during travel to endemic countries.

For more information on cholera monitoring in Europe and around the world, consult the websites of the ECDC and the World Health Organisation.

Also consult the guidelines of the Agency for Care and Health (Agentschap Zorg en Gezondheid) for Flanders, of AVIQ for Wallonia and of the Joint Community Commission for Brussels.

Sciensano contributes to the epidemiological surveillance of cholera in Belgium. This is done in cooperation with laboratories and regional authorities.
