The surveillance of rotavirus in Belgium is based on data originating from two different sources:

  1. Data from the network of sentinel laboratories: reporting by the laboratories participating in this network on the number of cases of rotavirus infections on a national and local scale.
  2. Surveillance of the strains of rotavirus circulating (genotyping) is provided by the National Reference Centre (NRC) for rotavirus (the UZ Leuven/KU Leuven).

A rotavirus infection is not a reportable disease in Belgium.

The data are incorporated into epidemiological reports and articles, which can be found in the ‘publications’ section at the very bottom of this page.

Sciensano collects data on rotavirus infections in order to follow the trends of this disease and its impact on public health in the Belgian population. Sciensano’s Belgian Official Medicines Control Laboratory (OMCL) is responsible, in cooperation with the European OMCL network, for quality control of the vaccine against rotavirus before it is put on the market.
