Syphilis in Europe
According to the European center for disease prevention and control (ECDC) in 2013 :
- 22,237 cases of syphilis were diagnosed in Europe (29 EU countries, no data for Italy and Liechtenstein), that is an incidence of 5.4 cases per 100 000 habitants
- syphilis was diagnosed 5 times more often in men (8.4 cases diagnosed per 100,000 inhabitants compared to 1.6 per 100,000 women).
- the majority of cases diagnosed concerned people over 25 years old.
- more than half of the cases of syphilis (58%) were diagnosed in men who have sex with men (MSM).
