Dr. Severine Matthijs MSc

Severine Matthijs studied biology at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. She was a researcher at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (Invertebrate department) for three years before returning to the Vrije Universiteit Brussel as teaching assistant and researcher. In May 2017 she obtained her PhD on the diversity and evolution of host-defense peptides in frogs. She started working at CODA (Sciensano’s predecessor) in August 2017, as responsible for the National Reference Laboratory for Bee Diseases. She is currently working on the optimization and implementation of molecular diagnostic techniques for the identification of bee diseases and bee parasites. In October 2019, she also became responsible for the National Reference Laboratories for TSE Diagnosis and for PRNP genotyping of sheep. Her research focuses on vectors and vector-born diseases.
