Coronavirus

Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause diseases, ranging from the common cold to serious diseases such as MERS-CoV (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) and SARS-CoV (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome). Coronaviruses are zoonotic, which means that they are transmitted between animals and humans.

Covid-19

The coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (previously called 2019-nCoV), causes the illness Covid-19 and is a new strain that was not yet identified in humans before. It was first reported in Wuhan, China, on 31 December 2019, hence its original name 2019-nCoV.

Sciensano closely follows the epidemiological situation of the coronavirus in Belgium. We describe the evolution of the epidemic and assess its consequences on the health of the Belgian population. Sciensano supports the health authorities in drawing up the procedures for health professionals. In addition, Sciensano coordinates the Risk Assessment Group (RAG), where the risk and the effect of the measures are assessed.
