Fruit, nuts, seeds and olives [1]

Why do we study dietary patterns of the population?

  • What we eat and drink has a direct impact on our health and well-being. By studying dietary patterns in the population (What foods are eaten? At what frequency? By whom?), we can identify areas for improvement and make informed decisions to promote better diets. This knowledge helps address the risk of diet-related diseases and supports the development of healthy, sustainable food systems.
  • The current page is focused on general consumption of fruit, nuts, seeds and olives regardless their conservation and preparation method. More information on the comparison of the habitual intake of ‘fruit’ or ‘nuts and seeds’ with dietary guidelines can be found here [2] and here [3].

 

How do we study the consumption of fruits, nuts, seeds and olives?

  • The consumption of fruits, nuts, seeds and olives consumption was assessed, overall and for different population groups, using data from two non-consecutive 24-hour dietary recalls. Trained interviewers recorded twice, on two non-consecutive days, all the foods and drinks that participants had consumed on the previous day using a specialised computer program (GloboDiet®).
  • The mean consumption of fruits, nuts, seeds and olives (in grams/day) was then calculated using the average consumption, overall and by sub-categories, over the two recall days of each participant. The top-10 most consumed fruits were also derived from the 24-hour recall data. Since mean distributions are skewed, comparisons between population subgroups should be interpreted with caution. 
  • In addition to the 24-hour recalls, participants (or parent in case of children) also completed a Food Frequency Questionnaire: they reported how often they consumed a specific food or food group in the last 12 months. On this page, we present the frequency of frequency of fruit, nuts and seeds consumption using the following categories: “Never”, “less than once a week”, “1 time per week”,  “2-4 times per week”, “5-6 times per week” and “once a day or more”.

What is included in the group of “fruit, nuts, seeds and olives”?

  • The results obtained on the basis of data from 24-hour food recalls include the following sub-categories: 

    • Fruits including fresh fruit, frozen fruit, dried fruit and canned fruit;

    • Fruit compote such as apple sauce and apricot puree; 

    • Nuts and seeds;

    • Nut and seed spreads such as peanut butter;

    • Olives.

  • Besides, results linked to data derived from the Food Frequency Questionnaire include:

    • Fruits, i.e. fresh or frozen;

    • Nuts and seeds such as almonds, peanuts, cashew nuts, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, chia seeds, etc.

KEY RESULTS

The mean consumption of fruit, nuts, seeds and olives is 126 g per day, of which 114 g of fruit per day
18% of the population never consumes nuts and seeds, while 9% consumes nuts and seeds daily
The proportion of the population that consumes fruit at least once a day increases with educational level
The proportion of the population consuming fruit at least once a day is the lowest in adolescents (10-17 years) (38%) and young adults (18-39 years) (36%)
Apple (60 g per day), banana (51 g per day) and fruit compote (21 g per day) are the most consumed fruits 

By sex

  • Mean consumption refers to the population mean consumption, calculated from the individual mean consumption over two non-consecutive 24-hour dietary recalls.
  • The mean consumption of fruit, nuts, seeds and olives is 126 g/day in the population aged 3 years and older, of which 114 g/day of fruit, 7 g/day of fruit compote, 4 g/day of nuts and seeds, 0.3 g/day of nut and seed spreads and 1 g/day of olives.
  • Men consume on average 124 g/day of fruit, nuts, seeds and olives, including 110 g/day of fruit.
  • Women consume on average 128 g/day of fruit, nuts, seeds and olives, including 118 g/day of fruits.

  • 48% of the population consumes fruit at least once a day.
  • 54% of women compared to 43% of men consume fruit at least once a day.  

Frequency of consumption of nuts and seeds in the population aged 3 years and older, by sex, Belgium: 2022-2023

  • 9% of the population consumes nuts and seeds at least once a day, 14% once a week and 44% it less than once a week.
  • 18% of the population never consumes nuts and seeds. This proportion is similar in men (18%) and women (17%).
  • More women (10%) than men (7%) consume nuts and seeds at least once a day.  

Most consumed fruit

Mean consumption (g/day) of the top 10 most consumed fruits in the population aged 3 years and older, Belgium: 2022-2023

  • Non-weighted results. 
  • Mean consumption values are presented based only on individuals who reported consuming fruits.
  • The most consumed fruits in Belgium are apples (60 g/day), bananas (51 g/day) and fruit compote (21 g/day).

By age

  • Mean consumption refers to population mean consumption, calculated from the individual consumption over two non-consecutive 24-hour dietary recalls.
  • Older adults (65 years and above) do not include those residing in care facilities, hospitalised individuals, or those who would have required significant assistance during interviews (e.g., people with cognitive impairments).
  • The mean consumption of fruit, nuts, seeds and olives is 139 g/day in children (3-9 years) and decreases to 94 g/day in adolescents (10-17 years).
  • In adults the mean consumption of fruit, nuts, seeds and olives increases with age from 107 g/day in young adults (18-39 years) to 131 g/day in middle-aged adults (40-64 years) and 154 g/day in older adults (65 years and above).
  • The mean fruit consumption decreases with age from 125 g/day in children (3-9 years) to 81 g/day in adolescents (10-17 years) and 96 g/day in young adults (18-39 years). It increases then to 118 g/day in middle-aged adults (40-64 years) and 144 g/day in older adults (65 years and above).

  • The proportion of the population consuming fruit at least once a day is the highest in children (3-9 years) (69%) and older adults (65 years and above) (63%), and the lowest in adolescents (10-17 years) (38%) and young adults (18-39 years) (36%). 

By educational level

  • Mean consumption refers to population mean consumption, calculated from the individual consumption over two non-consecutive 24-hour dietary recalls.
  • The educational level is calculated at the household level by considering the highest diploma obtained by: (i) the respondents or their partner for adults (aged 18 years and above), or (ii) the father and mother (or carer, if applicable) for children and adolescents (aged 3 to 17 years). However, for simplicity, we refer to the educational level of individuals rather than the educational level of their households.
  • The mean consumption of fruit, nuts, seeds and olives is 109 g/day in people with a low educational level, 135 g/day in people with mid-educational level and 150 g/day in people with a high educational level.
  • The mean fruit consumption is 99 g/day in people with a low educational level, 123 g/day in people with mid educational level and 137 g/day in people with a high educational level.

  • The proportion of the population that consumes fruit at least once a day increases with educational level from 44% in people with a low educational level, to 49% in people with mid-educational level and 57% in people with a high educational level.
  • 4% of people with a low educational level never consume fruit.

However, for simplicity, we refer to the educational level of individuals rather than the educational level of their households.
  • 6% of people with a low educational level consume nuts and seeds at least once a day, compared to 14% of people with a high educational level.
  • The proportion of people that never consume nuts and seeds is higher in people with a low educational level (24%) than in people with a mid- (12%) or high educational level (11%). 

By region

  • Brussels is excluded from the regional comparison due to an insufficient number of participants, but is included in the national data for Belgium.
  • The mean consumption of fruit, nuts, seeds and olives is 133 g/day in Flanders and 108 g/day in Wallonia.
  • The mean consumption of fruit is 122 g/day in Flanders compared to 94 g/day in Wallonia.

Frequency of fruit consumption in the population aged 3 years and older, by region, Belgium: 2022-2023

  • Brussels is excluded from the regional comparison due to an insufficient number of participants, but is included in the national data for Belgium.
  • The proportion of the population consuming fruit at least once a day is higher in Flanders (51%) than in Wallonia (43%).
