Gonorrhea

The use of a condom is essential to protect yourself and your partners against STDs. If you have any concerns, you should have an STD screening test. In the event of an infection, make sure you follow the correct treatment and inform your sexual partners.

What is gonorrhea?

Gonorrhea, also known as “the clap”, “a dose” or “a drip” is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

It particularly affects men aged between 20 and 34.

Cases of gonorrhea have been on the rise since 2002.

Gonorrhea does not generate immunity. An infected person who has been cured can become reinfected afterwards.

The symptoms may never appear while a person is infected.

Sciensano publishes two reports each year documenting the evolution of STDs in Belgium. The reports are based on data-collection networks.
