The conventional identification of dermatophytes requires a long turnaround time and highly skilled mycologists. We have recently developed a standardized matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) assay to routinely identify molds of potential clinical significance.
