BACKGROUND: Electron tomographic analysis can be combined with the simple and rapid negative staining technique used in electron microscopy based virus diagnosis. METHODS: Standard negative staining of representative examples of parapoxviruses and paramyxoviruses was combined with electron tomographic analysis.
