Cancer plan [1]

Project duration:
March 1, 2009
-
January 1, 2015

In short

In March 2008, Laurette Onkelinx, the Minister for Social Affairs and Health at the time, launched the Cancer Plan for a more proactive approach in the fight against the disease. The aim of the Cancer Plan 2008-2010 consisted of offering support to doctors, patients, families and anyone else involved in the fight against the disease on a daily basis.

Project description

The long-term action plan covers every aspect in the fight against cancer. With its launch it encompassed 32 actions spread across 3 domains:

  • Prevention and detection
  • Care, treatment and patient care
  • Research, innovation and evaluation

Action 32 provides for the Cancer Center to be set up for the purpose of evaluating and monitoring the Plan.
In December 2011, a government agreement made it possible to continue the Plan and add new actions to it.

Today, several actions and decisions arising from the Cancer Plan have been incorporated into the process. The Plan also provided the opportunity for topics in need of more detailed research to be identified.

The Cancer Center coordinated the 5 thematic working groups:

  • socio-professional re-integration
  • hospitalization at home
  • stem cell banking
  • a quality system within oncology
  • personalized medicine

Today, “cancer policy” is the preferred term (rather than “Cancer Plan”) to refer to the initiatives taken in the fight against cancer. The concept is more flexible, broader, more coherent and it is better suited to the reality in the field and the policy.
