Sciensano & Legionellosis

Sciensano contributes to the epidemiological surveillance of legionellosis in Belgium. For this, we work together with the relevant laboratories and the regional authorities.

Sciensano contributes to the epidemiological surveillance of legionellosis in Belgium. This is done by the Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases unit via coordination of the network of sentinel laboratories and the National Reference Centres, including Legionella (UZ-VUB/Erasmus-ULB). There is also close cooperation with the regional authorities. Legionellosis is namely a notifiable disease in the 3 regions.

When an epidemic is suspected, the relevant regional authorities are contacted, where the medical health inspectors can launch an investigation into the source among the patients. Sciensano can provide support for this epidemiological study.

At European level, Sciensano reports cases of legionellosis associated with travel. Preventive measures are taken when 2 cases have been reported within the same European tourist structure in 2 years.

These various activities undertaken by Sciensano thus contribute to the surveillance and control of legionellosis in Belgium, for the benefit of public health.
