Mpox

Mpox (previously known as monkeypox) mainly occurs in countries in West and Central Africa. Since the beginning of May 2022, cases of mpox have also been identified in several countries (within the EU and beyond).

The virus is transmitted primarily through intense skin-to-skin contact or sexual contact with someone who is infected.

The epidemiological situation is closely monitored. In Belgium, the number of persons diagnosed with Mpox is very low since 2023, but the virus is still present.

Additional information and recommendations can be found on the dedicated page on the website of the Federal Public Service Health.

Sciensano closely monitors the epidemiological situation of the Mpox virus. We describe the epidemic’s evolution and assess its consequences on the health of the Belgian population. In addition, Sciensano coordinates the Risk Assessment Group (RAG), which assesses the risk, evaluates the effect of the measures.
