Dr. Elena Damian PhD

Senior Scientist

Elena Damian is an experienced social science researcher with work experience in academic, policy-making as well as business and consumer research. Since November 2021, she works in the Unit Illicit Drugs and is responsible of conducting research on the health consequences of drug use and drug addiction.

Elena is passionate about understanding how various individual and environmental factors shape our values and behavior. She has done research on a variety of substantive topics, like civic participation, immigrant integration, social media influence, labor market insecurity, or mental health among drug users. Methodologically, she is a specialist in survey design and analysis of large scale surveys by means of multilevel and longitudinal modelling. Furthermore, she is an advocate for increasing quality of scientific research though research transparency, replicability, and other similar open science practices. As a postdoc at the Institute for Social and Political Opinion Research (KU Leuven, Belgium), she conducted research on the methodological challenges of multi-country surveys, importance of statistical power analysis, and developed guidelines on how to transparently report scientific information.

She holds a PhD in Economics and Social Sciences (Summa Cum Laude) from University of Cologne (Germany) and a Research Master (M.Sc.) in Social and Behavioral Sciences: Individual in Social Context from Tilburg University (The Netherlands).
