Sciensano has the honour to participate in the Scientific Summit of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA79), which will take place from September 10 to 27, 2024. This major event brings together researchers, decision-makers, and international organisations to discuss scientific solutions to global challenges such as climate change, health and food security. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals are a central theme, guiding the discussions and presentations.
Sciensano will be present at the summit as the Belgian nodal member of the METROFOOD-RI project. This project is established to improve metrology in food and nutrition by setting high standards to ensure the quality, authenticity and safety of food on both European and global levels. It is a research infrastructure aimed at enhancing scientific collaboration and addressing critical knowledge gaps on food. Sciensano’s involvement in the METROFOOD-RI project, underscores its commitment to advancing research and promoting sustainable solutions in the agrifood sector.
During the summit, Sciensano’s expertise in food safety will be highlighted, showcasing its chemical risk assessment capabilities and contributions to sustainable solutions.
The session titled “METROFOOD-RI: Agroecology, Sustainability & Innovation — a Pathway for Agrifood” will take place online on September 25, 2024, at 4 PM (New York time). This session will cover:
- the role of research infrastructures and their impact on addressing challenges in the agrifood sector.
- the “One Health” approach, an integrated approach connecting human, animal and environmental health for more effective risk management.
- innovative strategies to improve food safety, ensure product authenticity, and promote sustainability.
