In short

The Laboratory of medical microbiology (LMM) helps medical doctors from the Belgian Communities with the diagnosis of infectious diseases and the management of epidemiological outbreaks. The LMM does this by providing medical advice, logistical support in sample management, and laboratory-technical analyses of samples. Additionally, the LMM is involved in epidemiological surveys by providing data on infectious diseases and epidemiological outbreaks.

Project description

The LMM provides assistance to medical doctors from the Belgian Communities with the diagnosis of infectious diseases and the management of epidemiological outbreaks

The added scientific value:
The LMM is involved in epidemiological surveys by providing data on infectious diseases and epidemiological outbreaks in Belgium. This provides better insights on the spread of infectious diseases and suitable measures for prevention.

The added human and/or animal health:
The LMM works in service of society by providing advice, technical and logistical support to medical doctors in order to help combat infectious diseases and epidemiological outbreaks. Because of its immediate and coordinated management of outbreaks, a faster and more efficient intervention is possible.

The Laboratory of medical microbiology provides the following services to the communities:

  • Medical advice
  • Contact between laboratory and medical doctors of the communities
  • Scientific and technical support
  • Logistics support (providing transport and sampling material)
  • Involvement in epidemiological surveys
  • Annual, three-monthly and monthly reports
