Purpose of the test
Genotyping of Measles virus via end-point PCR and Sanger sequencing.
Criteria for conducting this test under the reference activities
Performed only on samples that are PCR-positive.
Unacceptable demands
If the genotype is already known for at least 5 cases per cluster or outbreak and there are no epidemiological or clinical indications for infection with a new or unusual genotype.
Instructions for samples
- Type:
- Saliva (via Oracol® collection device, can be ordered from the NRC via LMM@sciensano.be)
- Nasopharyngeal swab (dry swab, swab in UTM or swab in liquid Amiens medium)
- Sample collection: up to 7 days after rash apperance. Virus is detectable from 4 days before the onset of the rash until 7 days after the appearance of the rash (infectious period).
- Storage conditions: Store samples at 4°C before shipment
- Minimum volume: 0.5 ml

A positive result will also be reported to your region’s health inspector.
