Characterization of surface proteins, virulence, and determination of sequence typing through high-throughput sequencing

Last updated on 7-8-2025 by Amber Van Laer

Description of the assay

Strains of group B streptococci can also be further characterised by identification of genes encoding virulence factors, non-pili surface proteins or by Multi Locus Sequence Typing. Or better still, more complete characterisation is performed by whole genome sequencing (or WGS) on specific request or as part of specific assignments. Subsets of strains sent to the reference centre can be selected for further characterisation as part of specific surveillance.

Purpose of the test

To evaluate the distribution of these characteristics between strains isolated from patients belonging to different groups chosen according to age and type of infections and to look for correlation between patient group, infection type, CPS types and pili types.

Criteria to perform this test

Subsets of strains sent to the reference centre as part of specific surveillance.
