Description of the test  

Sequencing: typing of enterovirus in case of positive viral culture or PCR.

Purpose of the test 

Typing of enterovirus

Criteria for performing this test in the context of reference activities.  

Only in cases of clinically relevant samples:

  • Suspicion of poliovirus infection
  • Suspicion of enterovirus epidemic (=different epidemiologically linked clinical cases)
  • Epidemiological surveillance

Instructions for samples 

Respiratory sample (swab upper respiratory tract, BAL, aspirate), stool, lumbar fluid, blood, swab skin/eye, miscellaneous, RNA extractions or cell culture of these different samples.

Instructions for transport 

Refrigerated (2-8°C) with a maximum transport time of 48h. If transport possible longer than 48h, please ship frozen on dry ice. RNA extracts should always be shipped on dry ice.

Unacceptable requests 

  • Insufficient sample
  • Incorrect transport or storage
  • Application form not fully completed
  • Sample is not suitable for analysis

Turn around time (and frequency of analysis)

  • Suspicion of Poliovirus infection: response time = 3 days
  • Suspected Enterovirus epidemic: response time = 1 week
  • Epidemiological surveillance: no TAT defined; batch analysis
  • Diagnosis of poliovirus: 1 day

Reporting of test results

Results will be sent via email and/or fax according to the requesting laboratory or physician’s wishes.
