Epidemiological typing

Last updated on 17-12-2024 by Amber Van Laer

Description of the test

Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) is performed on STEC isolates to complement the results of systematic typing.

WGS-based typing:

  • O:H-type
  • Other variants of the stx gene (stx1a, c, d and stx2b, c, e, g)
  • aaiC and aggR: enteroaggregative genes
  • ehxA: enterohemolysin
  • core genome multilocus sequence typing (cgMLST) sequence type (ST)

Purpose of the test

Contribution to study the epidemiology of STEC infections.

Criteria for performing this test in the context of reference activities

  • STEC strains positive for stx2 with the exception of stx2f
  • STEC strains from HUS cases
  • STEC strains from outbreaks
  • STEC strains belonging to serotypes O26 and O157

Note: WGS can be performed on request for criteria other than those listed above. Please contact the NRC for this purpose.

Note: The frequency of implementation depends on the epidemiological situation.

Reporting of test results

  • The cgMLST ST is reported via mail
  • Global reporting of additional test results in annual report
