Panfungal PCR (Leuven)

Last updated on 27-11-2024 by Amber Van Laer

Test Description

PCR + sequence analysis (via Molzym UMD-Universal + GeneAmp 9700 + ABI 3730 xl)

Purpose of the test

Identification of fungus from samples

Criteria for performing this test in the context of reference activities

Only if microscopic fungi were demonstrated.

Appointment with the lab is required by calling 016 34 79 42. This test can only be requested after contacting a staff member of microbiology.

Instructions for samples

  • Sample: biopsy or normal sterile body fluid (various fluids). BAL is NOT an appropriate sample.
  • Sample should be kept sterile to avoid contamination with bacterial/fungal DNA from the environment.
  • Storage at 2-8°C.
  • A minimum of 1 ml of sample is required for panfungal PCR.
  • If 2 ml of sample is available, an additional Aspergillus species PCR (AsperGenius) is performed since higher sensitivity is achieved with a specific PCR compared to a panfungal PCR.
  • This requires an additional 1 ml of sample. In case of insufficient sample volume, only the panfungal PCR is performed.
