Treatments

The use of a condom is essential to protect yourself and your partners against STDs. It is recommended that women aged between 25 and 64 have HPV screening and that young girls aged from 12 to 14 years old (up to 18 years old) are vaccinated against HPV.

How can an HPV infection be treated?

The majority of the population has been in contact with HPV and the infection generally disappears spontaneously, without treatment (it can take months or years).

Warts can also be treated using a cream and if necessary, they are removed or treated using a laser.

Treated warts can recur. Some people will suffer from recurrences throughout their life, whereas others will only present with one isolated episode.

Sciensano compiles two reports each year documenting the evolution of STDs in Belgium. The reports are based on data-collection networks.
