Mumps in Belgium

Prior to the introduction of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine in Belgium in 1985, the incidence of mumps was about 500 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. This incidence dropped to about 50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, after adding the second dose of MMR to the vaccination schedule. Sciensano is responsible for the surveillance of mumps in Belgium and coordinates different surveillance networks. Sciensano is also the National Reference Centre (NRC) for mumps, measles and rubella. We focus on research of vaccine efficacy, investigate outbreaks and measure the seroprevalence in the population.
