Dr. Mathieu Gand PhD

PhD Student

Mathieu obtained his PhD in Biochemistry and Biotechnology at Sciensano under the scope of the SALMSTID project (funded by the SPF: Public Health), in partnership with the Bacterial Diseases and Transversal Activities in Applied Genomics (TAG) services. During his PhD study, he developed a new, rapid and accurate geno-serotyping method (Luminex) for the identification of the main Salmonella serotypes isolated from the pork and poultry sectors in Belgium.

Mathieu is now a post-doctoral fellow in the Transversal Activities in Applied Genomics (TAG) service of Sciensano where his research focuses on the detection of pathogens and their antibiotic resistance genes, using long-fragment metagenomic sequencing methods (project FARMED). Since the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, he also performs on a regular basis, with publicly available Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) data and bioinformatics tool, the in silico evaluation of the specificity of the RT-qPCR tests used for the detection of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coroanvirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (COVIPRIM project).
