Controlled use of personal data to prevent misuse

To be able to carry out Sciensano’s assignments properly, we often use personal data. This happens in a specific context that has been approved by the Privacy Committee. In order to ensure compliance with the Privacy Act and the General Data Protection Regulation, we have an information security policy and audits are carried out.

The Privacy Act, including the General Data Protection Regulation, aims to protect citizens from misuse of their personal data. It contains both the rights and obligations of the person whose data are being processed and the rights and obligations of the processor himself/herself. The term “data processing” means any operation carried out on these personal data, such as collecting, using, managing or communicating.

More information on this matter can be found on the website of the Commission for the Protection of Privacy, as well as the General Data Protection Regulation (Regulation (EU) No 2016/679 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data, and repealing Directive 95/46/EC).
