Detection of rabies virus antigen by fluorescent antibody test

Last updated on 5-2-2024 by Sanne Terryn

This test is performed in the frame of a postmortem diagnosis in clincally suspect animals or animals which are potentially infected (eg. import from an endemic country). The test is performed on nervous tissue (brain sample). Antemortem tests are not performed in suspected animals.

Results

Direct immunofluorescent test (FAT) is a quantitative test (positive/negative). In case of a positive result or an undetermined result, a PCR is performed to confirm the result.

Results are reported to the requesting veterinarian.
