Information for health professionals

As the vector for the transmission of TBEV is present in Belgium, and because animal surveillance has detected antibodies against the virus in different species at different locations, and because locally acquired infections in humans have been reported, tick-borne encephalitis should be included in the differential diagnosis of encephalitis.

Vaccination should also be recommended for people planning a trip with outdoor activities to a country where the disease is endemic.

Sciensano collects information on the number of people diagnosed with tick-borne encephalitis in Belgium and on the place of infection (country where the person travelled). We also collect information on the circulation of the virus in animals and on areas at risk of tick bites in the country, and we study the interaction between the virus, ticks and several animal hosts..
