Prevention barometer | Access to micro data

Last updated on 4-3-2025 by Lieke Vervoort

On 20 December 2019 The Flemish Government approved a decision to award Sciensano a subsidy to develop and conduct a study into the Flemish population’s knowledge of, attitude towards and motivation for prevention (the Prevention Barometer). The Prevention Barometer data comes under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR); a positive decision by the information security committee is required in order to share this data. However, the anonymised data from the Prevention Barometer may be made available:

  • to university research groups or groups associated with a university;
  • for analyses at the clients’ request;
  • to international health or statistics organisations governed by public law.

Request procedure

You may request variables which are recorded in the File code book of the anonymous database of the Prevention Barometer.  The short procedure is as follows:

  1. Fill in this document available in File Dutch or in File French which enables you to indicate the desired variables/modules, including your motivation. You need to use the code book for this.  Return the completed document to Sciensano by sending an e-mail to preventiebarometer@sciensano.be
  2. The Prevention Barometer team checks whether the variables requested are in proportion to the research objectives.
  3. As soon as the principle of proportionality has been guaranteed, you will receive a draft agreement from us, concerning the transfer of the data between both parties. Among other things, this agreement includes the arrangements for making the data available, the security rules to be observed, the data retention period, the methods of presentation of the results, the intellectual property and the responsibilities of the two parties. You will receive this agreement by e-mail.
  4. Sign the agreement electronically and then send it back to preventiebarometer@sciensano.be
  5. We then send the agreement, signed by both parties, back to you, via e-mail. That e-mail also contains instructions for access to the data requested.
