Dr. Pharm. Birgit Mertens MSc

Birgit Mertens obtained her Master in Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2005 from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. In 2010, she received her PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences also from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. After her PhD, she started working as a scientist in the Risk and Health Impact Assessment Unit of the WIV-ISP (the predecessor of Sciensano). She is involved in different projects and activities concerning the safety evaluation of food-related compounds, including the investigation of the genotoxic potential of food contact materials. In addition, she is responsible for the coordination of several activities and projects on the use of alternative methods to animal testing. Since April 2023, she is leading the Risk and Health Impact Assessment service.
