In short

Sciensano has been accredited by the Walloon government as an Expertise Centre in Health Promotion (CEPS). The CEPS serves as a scientific support to the implementation, development and evaluation of health promotion and prevention programmes in Wallonia. In particular, Sciensano is providing its expertise in the field of physical activity, nutrition and sedentary behaviour.

Project description

The actors accredited by AVIQ in Wallonia (Figure 1) are tasked with carrying out health promotion actions. Each actor has specific missions related to the Walloon Plan for Health Promotion and Prevention (WAPPS). Sciensano, as an Expertise Centre (CEPS), will fulfil five missions and conducts research, provides scientific and methodological support to health promotion actors and public authorities, and offers expertise to the Walloon region in the context of the 2023-27 Health Promotion and Prevention Program on topics related to nutrition, physical activity, and sedentary behaviour.

Objectives

A ministerial decree has granted Sciensano approval for an indefinite period as one of the centres of expertise in health promotion. A centre of expertise is accredited to carry out five missions:

  • Mission 1: Conduct research and data collection, including those related to gender, in health promotion and prevention
  • Mission 2: Provide useful information and scientific documentation for the implementation of the Walloon Health Plan for Health Promotion and to promote its adoption by stakeholders in health promotion
  • Mission 3: Support evaluation in various forms in the health promotion sector, including prevention
  • Mission 4: Support sharing and capitalization of field practices
  • Mission 5: Contribute to the development, evaluation, adjustment, and renewal of the Walloon Health Plan for Health Promotion

Activities

With the aim of fulfilling the missions assigned to it, Sciensano has developed a range of activities. This is a non-exhaustive list of these activities:

  • Analysis of food environments in Wallonia
  • Measurements of dietary habits and physical activity in Wallonia.
  • Evaluation of physical activity prescription programs
  • Analysis of policy on obesogenic environments 
  • Strengthening the network of key operators in health promotion in relation to physical activity and nutrition
  • Creation of a working group on physical activity and nutrition for knowledge exchange and capitalization of field practices
