- The three main reasons given for dietary supplements use in the Belgian population are: (1) health benefits (54%); (2) advice from a health professional (41%) and (3) a diagnosed nutrient deficiency (27%).
- Other reasons include managing health problems (13%), following a restrictive diet (8%) and replenishing nutrients after a blood donation (3%). An additional 2% cited reasons such as pregnancy, advice from a non-health professional or cosmetic reasons.
- The majority of men (55%) cite health benefits as reason for using dietary supplements, for woman this is 53%. The biggest difference between woman and men for the use of dietary supplements is the influence of a health professional’s advice, 45% of women report this as a reason for supplements use compared to 37% of men.

- For the other age categories, health benefits are reported as the main reason for the use of dietary supplements.

- The majority (71%) of the Belgian population purchases dietary supplements from a pharmacy, followed by 18% who buy them online and 11% from a parapharmacy.
- A smaller proportion obtains supplements from a drugstore (9%), an organic shop (4%) or a supermarket (3%).
- There is no difference in the place of purchase between men and women.
