Medicines and health products

Head of Service:

Highest quality medicines and health products

Using our advanced analytical methods, we regularly check the quality of the medicines, cosmetics, e-cigarettes and medical devices available on the Belgian market, as well as the raw materials used in them. At the request of the health authorities, we also study the health risks associated with the use of illegal and counterfeit pharmaceutical and cosmetic preparations.

In line with developments in the (bio)pharmaceutical and healthcare sector, we develop innovative chemical and toxicological analytical methods for medicines and health products. When validated and accredited, these methods allow us to follow the developments on the market – whether legal or not –and to assess the effectiveness and risks to health that may result from the use of these products.

Thanks to our activities in research, analysis and monitoring of legal and counterfeit medicines and health products, we are able to offer independent advice to the health authorities and assist them in defining and implementing their policies. As a member of the European Network of Official Medicines Control Laboratories (OMCLs), we benefit from the advantages of a large international network, which facilitates the monitoring of changes at the level of trafficking routes, for example.

In Belgium, we analyse medicines for the Federal Agency for Medicines and Health Products (FAMHP). We also work with FASFC, FPS Interior, FPS Public Health and the universities of Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent. At the European level, we are members of the network of Official Medicines Control Laboratories (OMCLs), participate in the coordination of the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines (EDQM) and collaborate with the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
