In Belgium, it is estimated that approximately 3000 people contract a confirmed salmonella infection each year (data from the National Reference Center). This is an underestimation of the actual number of sick people, given that only a small proportion go to their GP (not everyone becomes seriously ill) and only a small proportion of this group have been tested for the Salmonellabacterium (coproculture) in the laboratory.
The mortality rate is less than 1% for most salmonellosis cases and 10% for typhoid fever if antibiotic treatment is not provided.
