In short
Sciensano organises the TabakTalks project on behalf of Vlaams Instituut Gezond Leven. In this study, we will have smokers and recent former smokers talk about their intentions and attitudes towards their smoking behaviour via individual interviews. Furthermore, we will gain insight into smokers’ and former smokers’ experiences with the recognised smoking quitting aids.
Project description
Sciensano organises the TabakTalks project in 2024 on behalf of Vlaams Instituut Gezond Leven. TabakTalks is a qualitative study using individual online interviews. For the first time, smokers and recent former smokers are heard about their smoking behaviour, without prejudice or stigma. We ask open-ended questions such as:
- What do you find positive about smoking?
- What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of quitting smoking?
- What has been the biggest obstacles in your past smoking cessation attempts?
- What would you need to quit smoking successfully?
- What role could former smokers play in assisting current smokers to quit?
- …
The project focuses on smokers and recent former smokers of the Flemish Region in Belgium of at least 18 years old, regardless of their nationality or any other characteristic. The goal is to interview a total of 75 smokers and recent former smokers. Through TabakTalks, Sciensano, the Belgian Institute for Health, will gain more insight into the needs and requirements of smokers. The commissioner, Vlaams Instituut Gezond Leven, will use the results to improve policy around smoking cessation.
