In short

unCoVer is a functional network of 29 research institutions in 18 countries, including Sciensano, collecting data derived from the provision of care to COVID-19 patients by health systems across Europe and internationally. unCoVer valorises these real-world data to set up studies into patient’s characteristics, risk factors, safety and effectiveness of treatments and potential strategies against COVID-19 in real settings.

Project description

The COVID-19 crisis has faced many countries with unprecedented challenges. To face these challenges, many countries have set up active surveillance systems to monitor in real-time the number of cases, hospitalisations and deaths. The resulting datasets provide valuable information about the local pandemic context, yet remain scattered and unharmonised, impeding crossnational comparisons and international clinical and epidemiological studies.

The unCoVer network facilitates access to these otherwise scattered datasets and builds computational and analytical platforms to streamline studies on risk characterisation, and prediction modelling using standardised pooled data derived from real life practices. It fills data gaps, unifies current initiatives and creates downstream exploitation opportunities for researchers and public health strategies to optimise COVID-19 strategies and minimise the impacts of future outbreaks.

Sciensano contributes to the unCoVer network through the following work packages:

  • WP1: Data identification
  • WP4: Data analysis
  • WP5: Dissemination
