Control of blood product batch conformity (aka blood product batch release)

Before being placed on the market, each batch of blood derived medicinal products is:

  1. analysed in the laboratory and
  2. the quality assurance documentation provided by producers is independently reviewed and evaluated.

In Belgium, Sciensano certifies the quality of blood products made available to the population, as the officially recognised national laboratory for the control of biological medicinal products (i.e. vaccines and all plasma-derived blood products) by the Belgian health authorities. Sciensano is internationally recognised as expert by the European Official Medicine Control Laboratory (OMCL) Network.
