Sciensano coördineert de RAG. Meer informatie over de werkwijze is beschikbaar in de werkprocedure [4]van de RAG.

De RAG is samengesteld uit permanente experts (experts in het domein van volksgezondheid), ondersteund door gespecialiseerde experts volgens het type gebeurtenis (infectie, milieuprobleem, enz.). Elk adviesdocument vermeldt de experts die voor het gespecialiseerde advies werden geraadpleegd. Alle leden van de RAG:

• kennen de huisregels
• zijn gebonden aan vertrouwelijkheid van informatie en
• worden verzocht om eventuele belangenconflicten te melden.

De rol van de RAG is om:

1. de bedreiging te evalueren en het risico voor de volksgezondheid te beoordelen op basis van epidemiologische en wetenschappelijke gegevens
2. maatregelen voor te stellen aan de RMG om de bedreiging te beperken of onder controle te brengen
3. de impact van interventies te evalueren.

De bedreigingen voor de volksgezondheid kunnen van microbiologische, chemische of milieuoorsprong zijn. Het toezicht op potentiële bedreigingen is gebaseerd op signalen die worden vastgesteld bij routinematige epidemiologische surveillance in België (bv. onverwachte stijging van het aantal gevallen van een ziekte), en op informatie over bedreigingen die zich in andere landen voordoen, met mogelijke gevolgen voor België (bv. de uitbraak van ebola in Afrika). Dit wordt „epidemische inlichtingen” genoemd.  

De RMG bestaat uit vertegenwoordigers van de gezondheidsautoriteiten en wordt voorgezeten door het National Focal Point for the International Health Regulations (Nationaal focuspunt voor internationale gezondheidsvoorschriften), dat deel uitmaakt van de FOD Volksgezondheid [5].
Op basis van het advies van de RAG beslist de RMG over welke maatregelen moeten worden genomen om de volksgezondheid te beschermen. De RMG is ook belast met de communicatie naar de professionals in de gezondheidszorg en het grote publiek.
