Prevention

Type-2 diabetes is the most widespread kind. Its onset may be delayed or avoided by adopting a healthy lifestyle (healthy nutrition, physical exercise and weight watching). Type-1 diabetes, on the other hand, cannot be prevented.

A healthy lifestyle

Type-2 diabetes is one of the complications of obesity.

To prevent Type-2 diabetes, it is essential to:

  • monitor one’s weight and maintain it at a healthy level (Body Mass Index)
  • take physical exercise (at least 30 min per day; more if you want to lose weight)
  • have a healthy diet (more fruit and vegetables, less sugar and fat)
  • stop smoking (smoking increases the risk of cardiovascular disease).

Sciensano measures the prevalence of diabetes in the population and monitors the quality of care given to diabetic patients with the aim of improving it.
