De 7 AIDS Referentielaboratoria (ARL) in België zijn verantwoordelijk voor:
- HIV diagnose en monitoring:
- HIV diagnose bij volwassenen
- HIV diagnose bij pasgeborenen van HIV seropositieve moeders
- Bepaling van virale lading bij HIV patiënten
- Bepaling van antivirale resistentie bij HIV patiënten
- HIV laboratorium onderzoek:
- Monitoren van de prestatiekenmerken van testen voor HIV diagnose en monitoring op de Belgische markt
- HIV klinisch en epidemiologisch onderzoek:
- Verzamelen, verwerken en rapporteren van gegevens over de HIV epidemie in België
